La Huasteca Potosina: 4-Day Jungle Adventure in Hidden Travel Gem

4 Day Jungle Adventure in La Huasteca Potosina

La Huasteca Potosina – a Mexican gem so well hidden a lot of Mexicans don´t even know it. Including largest travel guide book publisher Lonely Planet doesn´t mention this ecological paradise. La Huasteca Potosina is located 400km north of Mexico City off the beaten track in dog-shaped state San Luis Potosí.

Key activities: Outdoor adventure and exploration. Think of swimming in rivers and jumping off waterfalls, white water rafting and cliff rappelling, caves with millions of swallows and – the icing on the cake – a surrealistic castle concealed in the jungle. It´s a fascinating area much easier to explore independently than one would initially think.

Huasteca Potosina México Desconocido

From my colleague Mitchel I borrowed the Huasteca 2009 edition of magazine México Desconocido which turned out to be the most useful guide around. Based on the magazine we organized a trip of 4 days and 4 nights but you can definitely stay longer if you like. Scroll down for detailed travel information and maps.

12 Things Every First-Time Visitor to Las Vegas Should Know

12 Things Every First-Time Visitor to Las Vegas Should Know

Truly one of a kind this superlative 24/7 city. Last month we crossed the Mexican border in search of something totally different. Without a doubt Las Vegas lived up to this expectation!

Three commonly asked questions:

Q: Did you gamble?
A: Nope.
Q: Did you dance on tables?
A: Nope.
Q: Did you get married?
A: Nope.

Even without these things we had an awesome time in Vegas 😉

We lost quite some time finding out about what, when and where to do. To save you that time I made a list for Vegas first-timers.

#3 Food & Cook Challenges You´ll Face Overseas (#2+3)

Some people are more attached to food from home than others. If you would ask Jan what he misses most about Germany his answer would be turkish Döner Kebab and greek Gyros, ha!

No matter how much or little you like your own culture´s cuisine, it´s quite some work to rebuild new food habits in a foreign country. A country with different eating costums, food distribution, spices and ingredients, product brands and quality standards, etc.

It´s really no wonder that expats start losing and gaining weight on and off in the beginning of their stay. Relocating abroad itself is a stressful event and it takes time to establish new food and excercice habits.

Self-made cook book - Hollandse Hutspot

In our first year of living in Mexico I started an ungoing Food Project just for the two of us. The main objective was developing a new balanced diet with old and new ingredients. Nourishing, tasty and efficient were three key factors, not to forget stomach-proof 😉 Every meal that didn´t meet those requirements, didn´t make it to the big pile of Jan & Marleen proofed recipes. It resulted in an interesting mixture of high quality recipes of various cuisines.

Two challenges in this endeavour (besides the doubtful food & water security I discussed earlier):

2# New Ways of Grocery Shopping
3# From-Scratch Cooking & Baking

#3 Food & Cook Challenges You´ll Face Overseas (#1)

I was having a surprisingly pleasant evening with two fellow “import” friends. Christina is from the Basque Country in Spain and gives Mexico a brave second try for her Mexican lover. Andrés was born in Rosario, Argentina, and has a propound passion for food and wine. The latter also has a talent for turning casual week-day evenings into exquisite cheese and (mainly) wine tastings.

In between small talk and personal conversations, we talked about the difficulties of cooking abroad. The food and water insecurity, new ways of grocery shopping and learning to cook and bake from-scratch. I named them the three “Food & Cook Challenges” you may face overseas:

1# Food & Water Insecurity
2# New Ways of Grocery Shopping
3# From-Scratch Cooking & Baking

Today we have a closer look at number 1: Food & Water Insecurity. Soon I will discuss the reamining two challenges.

Expats as Chameleon Supporters During this World Cup

Two soccer-crazy nations:
The Netherlands vs Mexico.
My home country vs my host country.

The Netherlands is the big favorite of the match but Mexico is a dangerous underdog. After a splendid group round for the two parties both sides have gained faith and are eager to win. Who´s going to the quarter-finals is the big question of today! How I celebrate this day?

It were the two most frequently asked questions of the week: which team will I support and how will I watch the game? Well that´s easy, I may have left but my heart will never betray my country during the soccer cups! 😀

Tlaquepaque & How I Ended Up Studying in Mexico

I never told you how I ended up in Mexico for my semester abroad. Well, it all started in this pretty town with this weird name: Tla-que-pa-que. Tlaquepaque is one of the eight municipalities of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. It´s the place where I had my first encounter with Mexico back in December 2007.

#6 Paradoxes of Everyday Life Abroad to Think About

One of my personal paradoxes abroad: While living in a highly collectivistic society, learning to enjoy being alone. In Mexico people have very large social networks and within that condition I somehow learned to like my own company. I wasn´t able to find that kind of inner peace in my individualistic home country, I had to be surrounded by large groups of people. That´s funny, isn´t it?

Along the way I noticed more twisted situations which reminded me of this academic paper called Expatriate Paradoxes and Cultural Involvement. The subject is paradoxical observations made by expatriates sent abroad by their companies. I recognized many of the comments and thought you might like to hear about it.

Do you recognize all six paradoxes?
